How your first message can make or break your chances
Applying for a job doesn’t start with the interview — it starts with how you respond to the job advert.
As recruiters, we often see brilliant candidates lose opportunities simply because of how they applied.
Let’s break down the good and bad ways to respond to job adverts, with practical examples to help you stand out for the right reasons.
BAD WAY #1: The “Hi, is this still available?” Message
Example:
“Hi, is the job still available?”
While this might work on Facebook Marketplace… it doesn’t work in recruitment.
Why this hurts your chances:
Shows no effort or interest
Doesn’t introduce who you are
Doesn’t reference the role
Gives the recruiter no reason to respond

BAD WAY #2: No CV, No Context
Example:
“Please see attached.”
(No CV attached)
Or worse — sending voice notes, selfies, or screenshots instead of a CV.
Why recruiters struggle with this:
We can’t assess your experience
It creates unnecessary back-and-forth
It looks unprofessional

BAD WAY #3: Copy-Paste Chaos
Example:
“Dear Sir/Madam, I am applying for any available position.”
This tells us one thing: you didn’t read the advert.
Red flags:
No role mentioned
No company mentioned
Feels mass-sent and impersonal

GOOD WAY #1: A Professional, Clear Introduction
Example:
“Good day,
I am applying for the Administrative Assistant position advertised on LinkedIn. I have 4 years’ experience in office administration and would love to be considered. My CV is attached for your review.”
Why this works:
✔ Polite
✔ Mentions the role
✔ Highlights experience
✔ Includes CV

GOOD WAY #2: Following Instructions Exactly
If the advert says:
“Email CV with subject line: Sales Consultant – Johannesburg”
Do exactly that.
Recruiters often use this to assess:
Attention to detail
Ability to follow instructions
Professionalism

GOOD WAY #3: Adding Value Without Overdoing It
Example:
“In addition to my CV, I have experience using Sage and Pastel, as required in the advert.”
This shows:
✔ You read the advert
✔ You match the requirements
✔ You respect the recruiter’s time

Bonus Recruiter Tips (Straight From the Desk)
Don’t send applications at 2am with “URGENT” in caps
Don’t WhatsApp unless the advert says you can
Don’t chase every hour
One polite follow-up after 5–7 days is acceptable

Final Thoughts
Your response to a job advert is your first interview — in writing.
Before you hit send, ask yourself:
Would I be impressed if I received this message???
A little effort goes a very long way.
